Storm gives Medicare clients more time
Medicare-eligible beneficiaries who lived in Arkansas in August 2020, as Hurricane Laura passed through, are eligible for a special election period until December 31, 2020.
The special election period is a result of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declaring a weather-related emergency in Arkansas during that period.
Medicare’s annual election period was October 15 - December 7, 2020. If you have clients or prospects who missed the enrollment deadline, they still may have a chance to sign up or make a change.
Who qualifies for this special enrollment period?
This special opportunity to enroll in, disenroll from or make changes to a Medicare health or prescription drug plan applies to all individuals who:
- Resided in an area for which FEMA declared an emergency or a major disaster during the period specified by FEMA
- Were eligible to participate in another enrollment period at the time of the incident
- Relied on help making healthcare decisions from someone who lives in the affected area
- Did not enroll or make a change during that other enrollment period
How to enroll?
Agents may submit enrollments through the Ascend platform by selecting the statement below as the special election period reason (see the enrollment form, page 5).
“I was affected by a weather-related emergency or major disaster as declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). One of the other statements here applied to me, but I was unable to make my enrollment because of the natural disaster.”
